![]() ![]() This starts with education, and I want students believing that they are capable of learning anything if they put their mind and soul into it. My decision to pursue teaching is that I have a passion to inspire others to be a better version of themselves. I have a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies and received my teacher certification in Texas for Core Subjects EC-6. I would describe myself as an eager life-long learner and educator who is passionate about teaching and learning new things. For instance, in many classes, I noticed students prefer visual learning and prefer videos and games, so I've incorporated that more into my lessons. My name is Michelle Wong Shum. I also try to make changes based on if the students are interacting with the lesson and are interested. I try to do this by giving students the opportunity to tell me what they like and what they don't like about how the lesson is being taught. I also like to allow room for student choices, I give students the choice (vote) of what assessment they would like to complete or I allow for each individual student to show me they understand the lesson in what way they see fit.Īs a teacher, it is important to be flexible and responsive. I like to use group projects, presentations, discussions, portfolios, creating models, etc to assess students. Instead of just giving tests and quizzes to determine students understanding I allow room for creativity. I do so by incorporating interactive elements into assessments. ![]() It is of big importance for me as a teacher to engage students with assessments. I use these strategies to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that supports student growth and success. Finally, I use a range of resources, including technology, books, videos, games, etc to allow students to enhance their understanding of key concepts. In terms of activities, I use a mix of hands-on, experiential activities and traditional lectures or readings to appeal to different learning styles. I also carefully pace my lessons to allow for adequate time for exploration and inquiry, while also keeping in mind the need to cover required content. One way is by grouping students in a way that encourages collaboration and communication. Questioning is also one of my most used to tools to assess student learning and identify struggle areas.Īs a teacher, I use grouping, pacing, resources, and activities to engage students and promote thinking and learning. Questioning allows for students to develop a deeper understanding o f the subject and make connections. I encourage students to explain their reasoning, provide evidence, and support their ideas with examples. I also think asking questions and creating room for discussions is a big part of creating a benefical learning experience for students. As a teacher, I expand my knowledge every day and what better way to do so than by learning from mistakes or shortcomings? I also take notes during class to keep track of any errors or areas that require clarification. I do this by reviewing my lesson plans and materials before class to ensure accuracy and ask for feedback from colleagues and other teachers. ![]() In order to ensure academic accuracy it is essential for me to monitor my oral and written language communications with students. I also frequently use visuals, such as diagrams or videos, to supplement verbal explanations. I try to communicate clear expectations by providing detailed instructions for each assignment or activity, including any necessary resources or materials and deadlines. As a teacher, it is important to communicate with students, promote discussion, engage students are learning, use assessment effectively, and demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.Īs a teacher, clear communication is key to ensuring that students understand what is expected of them in terms of activities, assignments, and content. ![]()
